Finally we are back on track. Again, the delay was something out of our control but now we can sort out the winners from April and so on. The first winner is Benny Haemelinck from Belgium who won a full refund for his rental car. As usual, we ask the winners to answer a few questions and here are the replies.
For how long had you planned your trip to Iceland and who where on the trip with you?
We stayed in Iceland for 1 week. I was there with my fiancé (wife by now), my sister-in-law with her boyfriend and my fiancé’s parents.
Tell us the route you chose to drive and how did you come down to exactly that trip?
We rented a home near Selfoss in south of Iceland. From there we drove every day in another directing.
My sister-in-law had some books from the library and she planned the whole trip with all the nearby highlights.

Why driving in Iceland in April when the driving can be quite tricky and the weather can be unstable?
Since my father-in-law is a school teacher we had to come in a schoolholiday. In April it was Easter Holiday in Belgium.
We choose Iceland because of the beautiful nature. In Belgium there is a lot of unstable weather, we were not afraid of that.
When you initially was handed over the Great Auk, what was your response?
We immediately started brainstorming for nice pics with our new best friend. We were making pics with it even before our suitcases were unloaded from the car.
Did you know about the Great Auk competition before you booked your car?
No we didn’t.
Tell us about the best part of the trip.
We enjoyed us all being together. We rented a big car so we could spend the drives together in 1 car.
We really loved Iceland and want to come back in Summer.
Was there anything on the trip around Iceland you didn’t like too much?
Some of the trips planned couldn’t happen because of the weather.
Roads closed, no ferry to the islands…
Was there anything that you were surprised to discover here?
That the weather can change faster then you can blink. We had sun, snow, rain, wind in 5 minutes.
If you could do the trip all over again, what would you do differently?
We wouldn’t change a thing, it was amazing the way it was.
Or maybe one thing, we would book 2 weeks instead of 1 🙂
What advice do you have for people coming here to drive around Iceland?
Have patience, take your time to drive! There was a car accident on the road to our home, the waiting time was 3 hours.
Or you could take a detour (like we did) but that took also 2 hours, so we didn’t win a lot of time…
