The Golden Circle is a great place to start

The Golden Circle is the most popular road trip, covering 3 of Iceland’s most iconic natural destinations - Thingvellir National Park, Gullfoss Waterfall, and Geysir Geothermal Area. There are a number of smaller attractions to hit on this route if time allows.

F-Roads require a 4x4

F-Roads are roads within Iceland’s Highlands, found primarily in the center of the country. They often have more difficult conditions and are only open during the summer months, so only 4x4 vehicles are permitted here. Driving off-road in any vehicle is illegal and punishable by hefty fines.

Speed limits in Iceland are strict

Speed limits in Iceland are notoriously low and speeding fines are particularly high. In urban areas, limits are typically 50 km/h, gravel roads observe 80 km/h limits, and paved roads 90 km/h. If you incur fees on your rental car, you will likely be charged a handling fee by your rental car company on top of the fine fees.

Beware of sheep near roads

Beware of sheep that are beside roads, as they can often dart in front of incoming traffic. This can injure animals and damage vehicles, so it’s important to be careful.

Do I need a 4x4 for F-roads and Highland driving?

Yes — and this isn't optional. F-roads (mountain roads into Iceland's interior) are legally off-limits to standard 2WD vehicles. They involve river crossings, loose volcanic gravel, and uneven terrain that will damage a regular car and void your insurance. If the Highlands are on your itinerary — Landmannalaugar, Þórsmörk, the Kjölur route — you need a proper 4x4. Our Dacia Duster 4x4, Nissan Qashqai 4x4, and Jeep Wrangler are all built for it.

What's the best car for a couple on a budget road trip?

The Hyundai i10 or i20 is the sweet spot for two people keeping costs down. Both are fuel-efficient, easy to park, and comfortable enough for multi-day driving. If you're planning to camp, our Renault Kangoo Camper or Fiat Doblo Maxi gives you a bed in the back and cuts accommodation costs — often making the higher daily rate worth it. For two people with a bit more kit, the Mazda CX-30 or Renault Megane Wagon adds luggage room without jumping to a larger price bracket.

How many people can comfortably fit in your vehicles?

Our small cars (Hyundai i10, i20) seat four and work well for two adults with luggage or a couple who pack light. Medium cars seat five comfortably and handle most group sizes. For groups of six to nine, our Renault Trafic and VW Caravelle seat up to nine people and come with luggage space to match. If you have a large group with camping gear, the VW Caravelle 4x4 is your best option — it's the only vehicle on our fleet that combines nine seats with 4WD. Not sure what fits? Can I rent a campervan and drive Iceland's roads?

Yes, and it's one of the best ways to see the country. Our campervans — including the VW Caddy, Renault Kangoo, and larger options like the VW California and Toyota Hilux 4x4 Camper — are set up for Iceland's campsite network. For paved roads and the Ring Road, FWD campervans work well in summer. If you want to explore gravel roads or go further afield, choose a 4x4 camper. Keep in mind that campervans are not permitted on F-roads regardless of drivetrain — those tracks require a dedicated 4x4 only. Iceland's campsite season typically runs from May to September; outside of that, wild camping rules apply.

“I had a great experience with Ace Rent a Car. They were able to get me a car at the last minute because the company that I had made advanced reservations with, did not exist. After driving the Duster for 2 days it became obvious that it would not be large enough for 4 adults and luggage, when our friends arrived. Most of the Ring Road (Route 1) is paved, so a standard car handles it fine in summer. The Hyundai i20, Mazda CX-30, or Renault Megane Wagon are solid choices if you're sticking to tarmac and campsite stopovers. That said, if you plan to turn off onto gravel tracks, mountain roads, or any of the Highland routes along the way, a 4x4 like the Dacia Duster gives you the extra clearance and grip you'll want. In winter, 4WD is strongly recommended regardless of your route.
